Cue6 presents the Canadian premiere of Kate and Sam Are Not Breaking Up. Zoom in on Hollywood’s hottest couple- Kate Thomas (Karen Knox) and Sam Lewis (AJ Vaage), are stars of a tween-fantasy movie franchise, who have split up for good. As media and fans alike erupt in speculation about the split, one super-fan is determined to reunite these teen idols – by any means necessary. Through a combination of kidnapping, torture and couples therapy, Kate and Sam Are Not Breaking Up explores just what happens when an obsession with celebrity spins wildly out of control.
Kate and Sam Are Not Breaking Up, the critically acclaimed hit from Chicago, is the brainchild of playwright Joel Kim Booster and The New Colony, currently one of Chicago’s hottest storefront companies. “Joel Kim Booster’s satiric comedy from The New Colony dives head first into this psychological morass [of celebrity obsessions],” says Nina Metz of the Chicago Tribune, “mining it for laughs as well as its legitimate creep factor.”
Part disturbing, part hilarious, the new Cue6 Canadian production features a stellar ensemble cast; A.J Vaage (YTV’s That’s So Weird), Karen Knox (Taming of the Shrew, Red One Theatre Collective), two-time DORA Nominee Tim Walker, Rebecca Liddiard (Recent graduate of Ryerson Theatre School), and directed by Jill Harper (Pieces, Cue6).
While Chicago is host to hundreds of small theatre companies, many finding critical acclaim and playing to sold out houses night after night, Toronto’s indie theatre company is still trying to find its feet, struggling to gain audiences and media attention. As a member of Toronto’s own expanding storefront theatre community, Cue6 is excited to produce Booster’s dark and exhilarating work and shine a light on the high quality indie productions that take place in Toronto.
Kate and Sam Are Not Breaking up will be on stage at Fraser Studios (76 Stafford St.) June 4-21. Performances run Wednesday through Saturday at 8pm with matinees on Sundays at 3pm. Tickets from $20-$40 available cue6.ca
